After four beta versions and one release candidate, FreeNAS 8.2.0 is available for download. FreeNAS is a free, open-source, Network-Attached Storage (NAS) operating system based on FreeBSD.

The FreeNAS development team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of FreeNAS 8.2.0-RELEASE. FreeNAS 8.2.0-RELEASE is the first release on new branch of code that incorporates tighter integration between the ZFS command line and the FreeNAS GUI. This release also features the ability to run arbitrary services and interact with them through the FreeNAS GUI in a FreeBSD jail. This jail allows a wide range of third party software to be run on top of FreeNAS, using the PBI format from PC-BSD or FreeBSD packages or ports, as well as official FreeNAS plugins. Additional features include: support for iSCSI target reload; GUI support for SAS and FC multipath hardware; WebShell accessible from the FreeNAS web interface; ZFS scrubs are configurable from the GUI; a newer web toolkit is used in the GUI, enabling use of mobile browsers; an autotuning script tunes ZFS for the hardware it’s running on.

For those updating from 8.2.0-BETA3|BETA4|RC1 to FreeNAS 8.2.0-RELEASE-p1

The GUI upgrade format changed in 8.2.0-BETA3 from xz to txz. What this means is that if you are attempting to do a GUI upgrade to 8.2.0-RELEASE from 8.2.0-BETA3|BETA4|RC1 use the .txz version of the GUI_Upgrade file. If you are upgrading from any previous version use the .xz file.

We at Brizoma were running our file server on the beta3 version, which was very stable. Today we made an upgrade to 8.2.0 Release-p1 using the txz file provided by FreeNAS. We just needed to go to:

Settings >> Advanced >> Firmware Update

• In Step 1 you need to specify where the temp firmware file will be stored (we accepted the default).
• In Step 2 we selected the image file from our local disk and entered the SHA-256 checksum value for the firmware update. You can find both files here.
• Accept and the system will start the upgrade.
• In our case, the system finished the upgrade and rebooted. The boot process apparently did not complete properly and rebooted by itself.
• After that automatic second boot the browser window refreshed from “Reboot” to “Login”.
• We logged in again and everything was running fine.

Some important notes for those who upgraded to 8.2.0-RELEASE instead of 8.2.0-RELEASE-p1:

8.2.0-RELEASE has a fairly nasty bug that crept in at the last minute….It has been removed from sourceforge and uploaded an 8.2.0-RELEASE-p1, but it turns out that has a very small issue as
well….the GUI upgrade from 8.2.0-RELEASE to 8.2.0-RELEASE-p1 fails because of a version check.

So, if you haven’t upgraded to 8.2.0-RELEASE you’re fine, just do a normal upgrade to 8.2.0-RELEASE-p1.

If you have upgraded to 8.2.0-RELEASE then you’ve probably noticed a very annoying bug, it doesn’t import ZFS pools at boot time.

What you’ll want to do is detach your ZFS volume from the GUI. There are two checkboxes, one for delete shares, one for mark disks as new. Make sure these are both unchecked.

After the volume is detached run the auto-importer and reimport your pool. From there go to system -> settings -> advanced and do a firmware upgrade to 8.2.0-RELEASE-p1. This will fail due to the version check, open the webshell and type in the following commands:

# cd /var/tmp/firmware
# cat firmware.img | sh /root/update && touch /data/need-update && reboot

When the system comes back up confirm it is running FreeNAS 8.2.0-RELEASE-p1
