Sunbird and Lightning removed from Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat

I assume you already read my previous article about Ubuntu having removed Sunbird and Lightning from their repositories for version 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx. If not, just follow the link.

In the “old article” I explained how to recover your calendar entries (Sunbird or Lightning), if you had upgraded your Ubuntu installation to 10.4 from any other previous version. Today I will focus on how to recover your calendar if you upgraded from 10.04 Lucid Lynx to 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. If you already upgraded to the newly released version, you will have noticed that your calendar is once again gone. But don’t panic: your data should be still there, and easy to recover.

The first thing you have to do is to make a backup in case anything goes wrong.

  1. Close Thunderbird
  2. Open Nautilus
  3. Look for /home/your-username/.thunderbird/
  4. Make a copy of everything that is in this directory.

So you are ready to start the recovery.

  1. Open your browser (you already have it open if you are reading this).
  2. Go to the Lightning FTP site and look for an up-to-date copy of Lightning.
  3. At the time of this writing, the latest version is the release candidate (1.0 B2 RC3) from the contributions site. The file is named lightning.xpi (right click on this link and “save-file-as…” e.g. onto your desktop). This is the required version if you run a 64-bit version of Ubuntu (why bother about 32-bit?).
  4. Notice that you should not install the extension over Firefox. If you launch the XPI file directly from within Firefox, you won’t break anything, but you will get an error message saying the extension is not compatible.

Next open Thunderbird and go to menu Tools > Addons > Extensions. You will see that the Lightning extension is still there, but as Disabled. Don’t try to update the file directly because the extension that Thunderbird finds is not compatible. So first remove the old extension. Don’t worry, it won’t delete your data or settings.

Then restart Thunderbird. Go to menu Tools > Addons > Extensions and click the INSTALL button. Look for the lightning.xpi file you saved before, click OK, wait three seconds for the button to get active and install the extension.

Restart Thunderbird once again and the magic should have happened. Your calendar and your data should be back.
