cPanel forums have been hacked
The cPanel Community forums have been victim to suspicious activity and a potential breach. Their system administrators have re-installed the forums and have enabled a forced password change the next time users login to their account. According to the email they’ve sent to registered users, the root cause of this has been identified and a fix is in place. They are recommending the following precautions:
- Update your current password to a secure password.
- If that password was not unique to forums.cpanel.net, please update the password on other websites or places that it has been used.
The cPanel Community forums are not tied to any other internal or external systems within cPanel. If you have any specific questions about this, drop their Customer Service team an email at cs@cpanel.net.
HP to Contribute webOS to Open Source
HP today announced it will contribute the webOS software to the open source community.
HP plans to continue to be active in the development and support of webOS. By combining the innovative webOS platform with the development power of the open source community, there is the opportunity to significantly improve applications and web services for the next generation of devices.
webOS offers a number of benefits to the entire ecosystem of web applications. For developers, applications can be easily built using standard web technologies. In addition, its single integrated stack offers multiplatform portability. For device manufacturers, it provides a single web-centric platform to run across multiple devices. As a result, the end user benefits from a fast, immersive user experience.
“webOS is the only platform designed from the ground up to be mobile, cloud-connected and scalable,” said Meg Whitman, HP president and chief executive officer. “By contributing this innovation, HP unleashes the creativity of the open source community to advance a new generation of applications and devices.”
HP will make the underlying code of webOS available under an open source license. Developers, partners, HP engineers and other hardware manufacturers can deliver ongoing enhancements and new versions into the marketplace.
HP will engage the open source community to help define the charter of the open source project under a set of operating principles:
- The goal of the project is to accelerate the open development of the webOS platform
- HP will be an active participant and investor in the project
- Good, transparent and inclusive governance to avoid fragmentation
- Software will be provided as a pure open source project
HP also will contribute ENYO, the application framework for webOS, to the community in the near future along with a plan for the remaining components of the user space.
Beginning today, developers and customers are invited to provide input and suggestions at http://developer.palm.com/blog/.
Linux Mint 12 released – Download now
The much-awaited Linux Mint 12, code name “Lisa”, has been released:
- The team is proud to announce the release of Linux Mint 12 ‘Lisa’.
- Linux Mint 12 comes with a brand new desktop, built with GNOME 3 and MGSE (Mint GNOME Shell Extensions), a desktop layer on top of GNOME 3 that makes it possible for you to use GNOME 3 in a traditional way.
- You can disable all components within MGSE to get a pure GNOME 3 experience, or you can enable all of them to get a GNOME 3 desktop that is similar to what you’ve been using before.
- Of course you can also pick and only enable the components you like to design your own desktop.
- The main features in MGSE are: the bottom panel, the application menu, the window list, a task-centric desktop (i.e. you switch between windows, not applications), visible system tray icons.
- MGSE also includes additional extensions such as a media player indicator, and multiple enhancements to GNOME 3.
